Lempel–Ziv–Welch (LZW) is a universal lossless data compression algorithm created by Abraham Lempel, Jacob Ziv, and Terry Welch.It was published by Welch in 1984 as an improved implementation of the LZ78 algorithm published by Lempel and Ziv in 1978.

LZW compression is named after its developers, A. Lempel and J. Ziv, with later modifications by Terry A. Welch. It is the foremost technique for general purpose data compression due to its simplicity and versatility. Typically, you can expect LZW to compress text, executable code, and similar data files to about one-half their original size.
The process used in a polyphase DCT filterbank is arguably more efficient than the widely accepted and adopted Lempel Ziv Welch algorithm but existing algorithms exist that outperforms the block based coding in a prediction loop that a DCT filter bank provides.
