My 6 yr old boy started 10mg LA Ritalin. No effect. Increase to 20mg. Made him hyperactive & loud at night. Moved to 10mg SA Methylin. Develop phobias for insects, irritated with clothing and insecure and anxious.
Ritalin is more likely to be discontinued because of ineffectiveness and Vyvanse is more likely to be discontinued because of side effects. Because Vyvanse is a pro-drug it has less potential than Ritalin to be abused, although head-to-head comparisons investigating abuse and dependence potential have not been done.
Ritalin, as a stimulant, can increase wakefullness and fight fatigue. One downside to this is that Ritalin used at night can cause insomnia. Another problem is that Ritalin's ability to keep someone awake all night for studying or partying can lead to abuse of Ritalin, leading to addiction. Other Side Effects
Adderall and Ritalin are both central nervous system stimulant medications prescribed to treat ADHD. Ritalin is not an amphetamine, so the side effects have a tendency to be milder. Common side effects are nervousness, agitation, stomach ache, palpitations, vision problems, and nausea or vomiting.
While Adderall is considered more addictive, Ritalin has more adverse side effects, particularly during long-term use. This comparison examines the applications, efficacy, dosage, side effects, withdrawal and abuse potential for Adderall and Ritalin, psychostimulant drugs prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy.
Interestingly, a recent study provided evidence for a role of the 5-HT1B receptor subtype in fluoxetine-potentiated methylphenidate effects (Borycz et al., 2008). This study showed that adjunct treatment with fluoxetine facilitated the stimulatory effects of methylphenidate on locomotor activity (Borycz et al., 2008).
